The outcome of the Akron Board of Education elections will not be fully known until sometime today. There are five write-in candidates, and Summit County Board of Elections workers won’t determine until today how many votes were cast for each person. The incumbent board president, the Rev. Curtis T. Walker, and challenger Tim Miller, an independent insurance agent, were the only names on the ballot for three available positions.Walker had received about 21,600 votes and Miller 19,300 votes with almost all precincts reporting late Tuesday, according to unofficial county figures.Summit County elections board Director Ron Koehler said Tuesday that board machines will record write-in votes and a total tally of all write-in votes that was to be available online Tuesday. But board workers will wait until today to count the number of votes cast for individual write-ins.With three open seats and only two candidates listed on Tuesday’s ballot, one of the five write-ins will join the school board in January. The five write-in candidates are Patrick L. Bravo, Robert Roe Fox, John David Goode, Gary Hagen and Cheryl Jean Shavers.Current school board member Amy Reeves Grom failed to file sufficient petition signatures to qualify for the ballot. Fellow board member James Hardy did not seek re-election, opting instead to run for a City Council seat. He lost in the September primary.Katie Byard can be reached at 330-996-3781 or kbyard@thebeaconjournal.com.
