Six write-in candidates for Akron school board
Akron school board member Amy Reeves Grom, who fell just 13 valid petition signatures short of qualifying for the Nov. 8 ballot, won’t be running as a write-in candidate for a second term. But she hopes to overturn the initial signature count that disqualified her.“I am planning on appealing,” said Grom, who is seeking a second four-year term on the board. Six candidates met the Monday deadline to declare their intention to run as write-in candidate: Patrick L. Bravo; Robert Roe Fox; John David Goode; Gary Hagen; Belinda J. Hinton and Cheryl Jean Shavers.Three write-in blanks will appear on the ballot, said Ron Koehler, Summit County elections board director.Three seats are open and only two candidates’ names will appear on the ballot: incumbent president the Rev. Curtis T. Walker Sr. and challenger Tim Miller.Grom had planned to run for a second four-year term and the third seat is open because board member James Hardy is running for Akron City Council.Board candidates for school districts in cities with populations greater than 100,000 must collect 300 valid signatures to qualify for the ballot under state law.Grom turned in 369 signatures, but it wasn’t enough of a cushion to prevent disqualification. State law prohibits candidates who already have filed to file again as a write-in for the same ballot.Barring a successful appeal, at least one of the six write-in candidates is guaranteed to win a seat on the Akron school board.
